| September 26, 2009 Even at the elementary age, the children still love to have a story read to them. Books like this are particularly good to read aloud because it often stimulates group discussion about life lessons, overcoming challenges, moral character, etc... Although reading is an individual activity, it should also be a social activity. I oftentimes learn things about the children that I never would have known otherwise. I don't read the stories to the entire class. I just read periodically when I see a group of children unsettled. If interested, I allow those that are working to quietly join as well. Their reactions and comments about these kinds of stories are fascinating. It reveals to me their finer qualities that sometimes are hard to see in the normal course of the class day. I am grateful to have the book. There are so many destructive influences buffeting our children around, it's hard to keep up. Keep writing. - Wendy Calise, Teacher at Countryside Montessori School from Northbrook, Illinois, USA |
